Eight

Seth bounded over a rock, slid down the hill, and came stumbling to a stop in the depression of the valley where the buffalo had been moments earlier. Dust churned in the air, creating a haze that stung his eyes. He coughed and tried to wave it away. No use. Through the haze of the powdery air, shapes took form on the ground.

He could only pray none of them were Collette.

If she’d been trampled, he could never—

Someone grabbed his arm. Seth yanked free, intent on a shape in the distance that appeared smaller than the two others he assumed must be buffalo carcasses.

“Come back.”

He ignored Austin. If the buffalo had trampled Collette, he didn’t know if he could live with himself. He should have never let her out of his sight.

“Stone!” Austin’s harsh whisper pushed through the unnatural quiet. “They’ll think you’re after their kill.”

Seth’s blood ran cold. He had no intention of interfering with the hunters and their prey. No telling what they would do if they thought he intended to steal from them. He only wanted to find Collette. Find her, hold her, and never take her spunky smile for granted again.

His throat burned. If he’d lost her, it didn’t matter if the warriors came. Nothing would matter anymore without her. He should have been there for her. Kept her safe. If he hadn’t rushed out of the wagon that morning, afraid she’d try to start up a conversation about Houston again… If he’d made sure she had everything she needed before he took off, this would never have happened.

It was his fault.

He’d pushed her away because of his own wounded pride. After everything that happened at the wedding, he should have been pulling her closer. Showing her that, no matter what, he’d fight for her. For them. Instead, he’d distanced himself. And even after ending up in a time warp, he hadn’t done a very good job of cherishing and protecting her. He’d scared her, laughed at her, and changed the subject every time she wanted to talk about their problems.

Some husband he would make.

Please let her be okay.

If he found her, he’d find a way to keep her safe. Always.

The dust dissipated, and the form on the ground became clear.

A buffalo calf with a handful of arrows protruding from its hide.

The air in his lungs released. Not Collette. He turned, scanning the little valley. Where was she? He knew he’d heard her scream. She had to be here somewhere.

Austin grabbed his arm again. “She ain’t here. Now let’s go.”

“I heard her. Did you?”

The man nodded. “She must have made it out of their way.”

Not sure if Austin had actually heard Collette and believed she avoided the stampede or he merely wanted to get Seth away from the three buffalo carcasses, Seth followed him up the hill and back toward the river.

What if she’d screamed because, instead of encountering the buffalo, she’d been found by the hunters instead? Would they have snatched her? Trampled her under their horses? What if—

“She might’ve gone that way.
